v Balbriggan
UCD U20C 12 - 21 Balbriggan
In the first 15 minutes of the game the young UCD forward pack scored two well taken tries, through pick-and-go's and good support play. The out half, Kevin McGettigan, was instrumental in breaking down the defence.
Balbriggan took a leaf out of our book when they started to pick and go close to our line. They always came onto the ball at pace very well and ended up taking two simple but effective tries to make the score 12-12 at half time.
Although UCD had the better start, their ill discipline would quickly get the better of them. UCD were good at going forward, but they lacked the streetwiseness, to hold onto the ball for long periods, but they are getting better at that.
After a talk at half time, UCD's discipline was much better in the second half.
In the last 15 minutes of the game Balbriggan exposed an overlap to score a try in the very corner. UCD didn’t seem under pressure at all, so the try came as a bit of a surprise.
Balbriggan took two penalty opportunities from far out to seal the game. In my mind Balbriggan took every opportunity that was presented to them. UCD on the other hand, played the game very well, but need a bit more experience that comes with age.
I have no doubt that these players will get better and better and that they will make a big impact on next year’s under 20 teams. In terms of ability, these guys have it. In terms of size, opposing teams are better equipped this year. Never the less, they can play some very attractive rugby.
