UCD under 20B 55 - 0 St Mary’s
Belfield November 2nd 2008
UCD’s under 20 pennant team had a comfortable win over St Mary’s yesterday afternoon in glorious conditions in Belfield. Collidge enjoyed the perfect start when after five minutes blind side flanker Tim Gleeson went in near the posts after some good work by hooker Neal Foley which was converted by out half Daniel Clifford. The Collidge backs were enjoying the sunshine and the quick ball that the forwards were producing and were causing St Mary’s problems when the ball was moved wide. The second score for UCD came after twelve minutes when second row Will Courtney fresh from his starring role in the Cavan senior football championship win for Cavan Gael, Will used all of his six stone and six foot three frame to score wide on the right, out half Clifford missed the conversion (and that description is being generous !). Collidge went to sleep for the next twenty minutes or so but after a period of Mary’s pressure the students awoke to get their third try from centre David Fahy after some good work down the left hand side by full back Eddie Fox and wing James Finnegan. The half time score was seventeen nil to Collidge.
Collidge dominated play in the second half and were soon back on the score board when John ‘give me the f******g ball’ Conroy finally received a pass and he managed to outpace the covering defence to score under the posts. This was converted by Clifford to stretch the UCD lead to twenty four points. It has to be said that John was unlucky not to get any decent ball in the first half but when your tight head prop thinks he is an outside centre what can you do……….!
Further scores for Collidge came from Eddie Fox, Shane O’Meara, John Conroy and James Finnegan. This was a fine performance from Collidge and it would be unfair to highlight any one player as everyone from the matchday 22 contributed to this victory. It also keeps the pressure on those in the Premier squad who won the Conroy Cup in Belfast last week (despite the efforts of the bus driver).
I would like to thank Iain Mays and Joe Mackenzie (congrats to Joe who along with his girlfriend Julie were celebrating their one month anniversary – Joe actually sacrificed joining his teammates on a night out to celebrate this auspicious occasion) for helping out yesterday in the absence of manager Mairead Buckley and coach Pete Herangi.
Next weekend we face top of the table Bective Rangers and any support would be appreciated.
Finally I would like to thank the lads for their midnight rendition of the Yera Wadee…..it was very much appreciated.
