Tour Blog

(16 Aug 2010)

After some gruelling weight sessions throughout the summer months and 2 weeks of intensive pitch work, the Centenary Tour to South Africa starts today. It is worth reiterating that this tour would not be possible without the tireless work of the numerous committees behind the scenes. Particular thanks must go to Billy Murphy who has been the driving force behind the tour. We are extremely grateful for all their efforts and endeavour to wear the blue jersey with pride in South Africa.

The fundraising efforts are now a distant memory as we embark on what will be an unforgettable experience. There is truly no better way of galvanising a team than spending 2 weeks together in a camp environment. Despite the oval ball feeling a bit alien during the week and complaints of blisters and heavy legs, pre-season training has been sharp and well attended. Bobby mentioned during the week that punctuality is critical on tour. I wonder if John Anthony Lee (notorious for his tardiness) will make the flight.

We had an early injury scare in our final training session on Irish soil when Jonesy (Terry Jones) rolled his ankle in the warm up.  There were a few worried faces when the ambulance turned up to bring Jonesy to St Vincent’s. Thankfully Terry was diagnosed fit to tour and the squad was ready to take off.

Our mascot for the tour will be Finbar the lion, named after its donor Finbar Costello. Mrs Shanley has kindly knitted a blue jersey for Finbar who will be looked after by Neil Foley in South Africa, the youngest squad member.
