To hell or to Connaught - or the back pitch in Terenure…

Abstaining from a ‘Dylan going electric’ like fuss the J1’s trudged westward, over the pony track and the rude bridge that arched the flood until at last arriving on the Terenure 3rd’s pitch. They’d managed to lose only 3 men to the journey.

With expectation high UCD began the game with plenty of purpose and intention however before too long the Collidge treasurer could be found watching the game from behind an abandoned sofa, wincing at UCD’s inability to recycle – a hefty carbon credit bill awaits.

Collidge battled bravely but struggled to cope with the strength of the Terenure fifteen. The normally powerful set piece also struggled leaving a makeshift backline with the unenviable task of beating a 9up defence on a pitch measuring 26 yards in width.

Though both the performance and the result were disappointing Collidge never gave up and perhaps had a little more composure been shown they may well have scored either side of half time. In particular an excellent short side break by Rob Shanley ought to have resulted in points. Stephen O’Dwyer (Fresh from his tanning session for A.N.T.M.) and Dave Gilchrist did well to link with the scrum half but the ensuing phases were too slow and frustrated the J1s into making improbable passes and ultimately turning over possession.

Much love to the referee – he really knew his onions.
