Cup Returns to Belfield
(28 Oct 2008)
Eoghan Conran, Captain, receives the Conroy Cup from John Callaghan, Senior Vice President IRFU
UCD 9- 7 UCC
After a lapse of five years the Conroy Cup returned to UCD this weekend. An intervarsity competition for Under 20’s the Cup commemorates the memory of the late Paddy Conroy who acted as Honorary Secretary and President of UCD RFC.
This year’s event was admirably hosted by Queens University and was played in atrocious conditions in Belfast. The two semi-finals resulted in comfortable wins for College and UCC over Queens and Trinity respectively.
The final on Sunday was a tight game dominated by a gale force wind and featured a biting hail shower. UCC won the toss and elected to play against the wind. Three penalties by full back Noel Reid gave UCD a 9-0 half time lead. In fact another kick was deemed over by both touch judges but the referee overruled them and signalled it wide. UCC felt that they had done enough and celebrated their performance exuberantly; prematurely as it turned out.
A converted try after 4 minutes by UCC seemed to bode badly but in a manner similar to the 1st team performance against Blackrock heroic defence and powerful ball carrying kept UCC out. The final whistle brought relief and the Cup to College.
